Phentermine Uses

In 1959, Phentermine was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a prescription weight loss medication and fifty years later Phentermine is still one of the most commonly prescribed diet pills. Phentermine use is intended for overweight people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and above, but is also recommended for people with a BMI below 30 who also have an obesity-related condition, such as type 2 diabetes.

Although Phentermine was very effective in aiding weight loss, one drawback was that it could only be taken for a couple of weeks before the body became desensitized to its effects. In an effort to make the effects of Phentermine last longer, doctors began combining Phentermine with other prescription appetite suppressants, including fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine (Redux). These modifications made to the original FDA-approved Phentermine use guidelines were termed ?off-label use?.

The combinations of Phentermine with dexfenfluramine (Dexfen-phen) and fenfluramine (Fen-phen) resulted in Phentermine remaining active in the body for longer periods of time. With this discovery, these new Phentermine combinations became commonly prescribed for weight loss. It wasn?t until July 1997 that the FDA published a Public Health Advisory regarding the potential dangerous side-effects of Fen-phen and use of this potentially lethal combination of drugs was halted.

Today, Buy Phentermine diet pills are still prescribed by doctors for the treatment of obesity. When used in combination with diet, exercise and behavior therapy, Phentermine can aid weight loss and help to significantly lower the occurrence of health conditions associated with obesity. Because of the potential for negative side-effects and abuse (addiction) Phentermine can only be purchase by prescription and should only be taken under the guidance of a doctor.
